What is the meaning of the word ‘Cannolo’?

The word ‘cannolo’ in Sicilian means ‘tap’.
In fact, this sweet evokes the image of a tap where instead of water a sweet, creamy cream flows.

The history of the Cannolo

This dessert has ancient roots, dating back as far as the time of Cicero, who mentioned it during a trip to Sicily in 70 BC.
Its origins are shrouded in legend, but one of the most popular theories is that the Sicilian Cannolo originated in a convent in Palermo,
where nuns supposedly created this delicacy during Carnival.
As a joke, the nuns filled a vat with ricotta cream and sugar and replaced the taps with cannoli wafers.

Also supporting this hypothesis is the fact that in Sicilian the word cannolo means precisely tap.
